Eating with braces

Wearing braces won't put your life on hold, but there are a few minor changes you are advised to make to your diet to ensure you teeth stay healthy throughout treatment and you get the results you're after.

What to eat

Healthy food! Keep up your intake of fresh fruit and veges – although you may want to opt for softer options. Biting into a crisp, crunchy apple isn't ideal with braces on, but cutting it into smaller pieces will still enable you to enjoy it.

The only times you may find it difficult to eat is when your teeth are tender after having your braces tightened or a new appliance fitted. Some easy, nutritious foods to eat at this time include:

  • Smoothies, but try to avoid ones with berry seeds in
  • Omelettes
  • Mashed potato and gravy
  • Grated apple
  • Porridge

What not to eat

Hard, chewy and sticky foods, including chewing gum, must be avoided when you're having orthodontic treatment as these have the potential to damage the brackets and wires, thus affecting your treatment. You should also avoid highly acidic and sugary food and drinks as this can contribute to plaque build up and affect the condition of your teeth. If you're craving your favourite boiled sweets, try these options as an alternative:

  • Yoghurt
  • Soft biscuits (soften them by dunking them in milk)
  • Macaroni cheese
  • Grapes
  • Pancakes

Most of the time you can eat what you want while having orthodontic treatment, but what is really important is that after every meal you brush and floss your teeth, finishing with a rinse of mouthwash. This is obviously easier to do if you've been fitted with removable appliances, like Invisalign, but whatever type of treatment you're receiving, good oral hygiene is essential!
